An engineer by training and a naval officer for thirty years, Victor Crockett brings the discipline of the sea to the voyage to Mars.
He studied engineering at Southampton University in the Aeronautical and Astronautical department before graduating in Ship Science, joining the Royal Navy Reserve along the way. He went on to work as a professional engineer in Glasgow, Dundee, London and Portsmouth, while a thirty-year naval career took him from operations at sea into naval intelligence.

The forests of 1801
Perhaps the highlight of his intelligence career: a letter from the Danish Agricultural Agency to the Danish Ministry of Defence, reporting that the forests planted in 1801 by order of King Christian VII had finally matured, and asking where the timber should be sent to replace the fleet sunk by Nelson at Copenhagen. A request went to the Military Attaché in Copenhagen to investigate.
